I got my name in lights with notcelebrity.co.uk

Things Accomplished-Thing 23

I have finally finished all 23 Things. What a wonderful experience. I had been vaguely aware of some of these things but I never made an effort to understand how they work and what usefulness they had until I ventured on this project. Some of the things I will definitely incorporate into my daily routine and in assisting customers. Another plus to this project was the wonderful camaradie our staff had sharing ideas and helping each other out. Libraries are powerhouses of knowledge, be it the written word or the latest technology and for our place in society to continue into the future our staff must always be open to new and challenging "things".

Week 9-Things 20, 21 & 22

Thing 20-YouTube
I LOVE IT!!!!! I have gone to YouTube before and am familiar with it. I found some great Boston Terrier videos.

Thing 21-Podcasts
I really like to search for podcasts via Yahoo. A podcast is like a radio show and each show consists of a series of individual episodes that you can listen to when and how you want---on your pc, mp3 player or web browser. In my search I also discovered a site for books and wonder of wonders also discovered an RSS feed for Nancy Pearl. This I will definitely use.

Thing 22 I looked at Project Gutenberg and see that it has really expanded its offerings. You can download e-books to your personal computer and some but not all titles can be downloaded to your mp3 player. I also looked at Overdrive through our library catalog. I am familiar with it but really haven't accessed it in a long time. I was suprised to discover that you can now download videos. The areas of interest include classic, IMAX, foreign and some Shakespeare.

Week 8-Things 18 & 19

Thing 18

I looked at Google Docs and really like it. The advantage to this is that you can compose something on one computer and then open it up on another computer half way around town. Nice.....I particularly liked Google Calendar. You can create your own personal calendar and then add to it either from private information from yourself or you can add to your personal calendar from public calendars that are available from the Google Calendar site. Some of these public calendars include the release dates for Netflix movies...very nice.

Thing 19

I looked at the Web 2.0 awarded sites and particularly liked kayak.com. This is a travel site. One of the neat things about this site is the flight information. You can put in information about a flight you want to take and you can get all the results from Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz in one list. Neat. I will definitely use this with library customers and for myself.

Week 7 Wikis-Things 16 & 17

Thing 16

Wikis are fun and can be very useful and informative. Many of us have already made use of Wikipedia. I looked at a few wikis and particularly liked the Princeton Public Library's Book Lover's Wiki. This is something BCPL could do.

Thing 17

Learning 2.0 Sandbox wiki. Take a look at "Favorite Dogs" and you might just see Nellie.

Week 6-Things 13,14 & 15

Thing 13-Tagging & Del.icio.us
I looked at Del.icio.us and registered. It is ok. I don't think that I will really use it. It doesn't have dependable information and includes ads. If you are looking for fad things it might be fun.
I also learned about tags and how you can make your own tag. Sort of like creating your own library subject headings.

Thing 14-Technorati
Technorati is a resource where one can search blogs. There is some very rich information in the "blogosphere" if you know how to find it. I have mixed feelings about Technorati. In doing a simple keywork search for diabetes 2 I found information but I also found blogs for needless and invaluable information which includes drug advertisements and porn. I doubt that I will use this source beyond this exercise.

Thing 15-Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries

I was really moved by the YouTube video "The Machine is Us/ing Us". It is a musical mosaic of all the current technology and how it is affecting us in our lives. For the library profession to survive in the future we must adopt these new and rapidly evolving technologies and make them part of our daily lives.

Week 5-Thing 10-Online Generator

Thing 10
I completed Thing 10, the Online Generator which was a lot of fun. I really liked the generator that I created so you will see the results of my work at the top of this page.

Week 5-Thing 12

Rollyo is interesting. It is nice to have the ability to put all your favorite sites into one "roll".http://www.rollyo.com/nellie/ The first roll that I created was for Reader's Advisory.

Week 5-Thing 11 Library Thing

This is wonderful. I don't know how much I will use all the "23 things" that I have learned in this program but I will definitely use Library Thing.

Week 4-Things 8 & 9

Busy at work and vacation kept me away from 23 Things. I am back now and so far have accomplished Things 1-9.

Things 8 & 9

I learned about the RSS feeds from Google and subscribed to some news feeds and health related feeds. MERLIN was interesting. There are so many resources available to us out there in cyberspace.

Week 3-Things 5,6 & 7

Things 5,6 & 7
Well I learned Flickr today. Flickr has some pretty neat offerings. I like the fact that you can search too. I uploaded some pictures including one of Sneaks. It will be interesting to see if anyone searches for him (or her).
I had some Flickr fun and looked at some mashups and 3rd party sites. I don't think I will personally use them though. I have a Kodak digital camera and use Kodak's ofoto.com site to upload and share my photos. I have been pretty successful with that site.

Week 1 and Week 2-Things 1,2,3,4

Thing 1
Learning Blog-Wow this is a whole new learning experience. A whole new world. I have viewed many blogs-especially with certain tv shows like Lost so I do understand this a little. Although a bit confusing I am catching on. Having the basic skills and having read all the information has really helped.
Another wow....I took my time and followed the directions and was able to pull up a picture of a pretty azaela bush from my backyard and put it in this blog. I did this from my home computer and was able to go into my program files and then into my photofile and got this picture. Neato......By the way one of my passions is my garden. Gardening is such a wonderful hobby...
Thing 2
Life Long Learners-
This is a very good exercise. It is based on Covey's 7 1/2 Habits. Learning is defined as acquiring a new skill or knowledge. Each person has their own learning style. Of the habits I particularly embrace are to view problems as challenges and have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner.
Thing 3
I have set up my blog and you are seeing the results of my first post.
Thing 4
My blog is registered.
